Running Update and Race to Wrigley 5k

So I’m finally getting back into the running grove. The biggest mistake that I have made was going into hibernation mode after the marathon last year. I literally did not run 1 mile until 4 months later. So stupid.

Well, I finally have a solid month of training under my belt, and even though I’m still extremely out of shape, I can start to see the light. My long runs are getting easier every day, and I actually did my first speed work out today, with a running team at Harper College, for the first time since high school (9 years ago… #%*&, i’m getting old). It definitely kicked my butt.

This past weekend I went down to Wrigley Field to do the Race to Wrigley 5k with my Dad and two little brothers. For only being 8 and 10, and running 7 minute something miles in the race, I think Ryan (my other dysfunctionally fast brother - www.rybread.com), may have something to start to worry about. Heck, they’ll be nipping on my heels any day now…

Obama’s Dog Bo

bo_obama_dog
Bo, the Obamas’ new dog

I know this isn’t new news, but the Obamas recently got a new family member, a Portuguese Water dog named Bo. The funny thing about this is that when Katie and I got our dog Maddie, we initially named her Bo. However, after a couple days we realized that her name sounded too much like “no”, and we were scared she would be confused to as if we were calling her name or yelling at her. I wonder if this will pose a problem for the Obama family.

A Thousand Splendid Suns - Book Review

thousand_splendid_suns

I just finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Afghan author Khaled Hosseini, who also wrote The Kite Runner. It was fantastic and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something to read. The story revolves around the lives of two Afghan women from 1960 to present day. Even though the book is fiction, it still paints the reader a very real picture of how normal civilians have had to live their lives the past 50 years. I don’t want to divulge too much into the plot, or give anything away, but all I can say is that it will be very hard to put down once you start reading it.

2009 Lollapalooza Lineup

lollapalooza_2009

So I wasn’t super impressed when I heard about the headliners a couple months ago, but I am super stoked about the rest of the lineup that was just just announced. Snoop Dogg, Rise Against, Andrew Bird, TV on the Radio, The Decemberists, Band of Horses, Ben Folds, Fleet Foxes, Crystal Castles, Bon Iver, Santigold, Cold Was Kids, Deerhunter, Peter Bjorn and John, Dan Deacon, The Gaslight Anthem, Friendly Fires, Ra Ra Riot, and Arctic Monkeys make it for a solid festival. Nice job Perry.

Time to start a lolla mixtape…

Week Recap

I finally got my computer back. For the past few months I have been having problems with my display. They ended up having to replace my graphics card. Luckily, I bought the AppleCare Protection Plan and it didn’t cost me anything. Not having a computer for a week was very weird. There were times that I felt lost and out of touch. However, it was also very refreshing in a way.

So what has been going on the past week? Well last Friday I headed down to my alma mater in Champaign, the University of Illinois, with my Dad, brother Ryan, his girlfriend Jacqui, Katie, and my 2 little bros Jason and Alex. My brother Ryan is a professional triathlete and an elite runner, so they offered him a free hotel room and free registration to the first U of I Marathon / Half Marathon / 5k. He ran the half marathon and ended up taking 2nd place overall and won $400, so that was pretty cool. His girlfriend also is an elite runner and took 4th overall for women. As for me, I finished in the middle of the pack. Considering I haven’t ran more than 3 miles since the marathon last October, I was just glad to finish.

Sunday was Easter and we went to a brunch. Total rip off. $35 a person for some scrambled eggs and french toast sticks. I was actually sick that we wasted that much money on such a crappy meal. Although, I guess the more important thing was that we were with family.

Sunday night Katie and I headed over to my grandparents house so that my grandpa could play us some songs on the piano that we might want in our wedding. He is going to play at the church and also for a little bit at the reception. We gave him some good songs to work on so that was pretty cool to get that checked off the list. Wedding planning can be a pain in the butt…

So yeah, thats about it. I will get back into the routine of posting daily blog posts tomorrow…

Technical Difficulties

Mac is in the repair shop. Blogging will be back in full action within the next few days…

Peter Bjorn and John - Nothing to Worry About

The first single off Peter Bjorn and Johns “Living Things” is “Nothing to Worry About”. I’m glad they’ll be at Lollapalooza again…

On another note… My brother’s girlfriend is in a Nike Contest to win a trip to the Hawaii Marathon. If you have a chance please click on this link to vote for her. Thanks!

Lollapalooza has worked its way into my yearly calendar, which basically means I make sure to schedule all the things I wanna do in the summer around it. This will be my third one and nothing beats chilling out in Grant Park for 3 days while getting to listen to some of the best musical acts out there. I was lucky enough to score one of the $60 3 day passes through one of my buddies, so I’m even more stoked to go this year.

So what do I think of the lineup so far this year? Well, I think the headliners are decent. I’ve always wanted to see the Beastie Boys so that will be cool. I’ve also loved Kings of Leon, and saw them 2 years ago, so I’m looking forward to hearing their newer album live (which was one of my favs of 2008). I’ve never seen the Killers live, but never really got hooked on their new album, so I hope they mix a lot of their older stuff into their set. As for Janes Addiciton, I don’t know if they should have a headliner spot, but hey this is Perry Farrell’s thing so I guess it’s cool. Well as long as they play Jane Says…

All in all, no matter who plays there is sooo much music, and so many treasures of bands that you haven’t heard of, that you’re bound to have a great time. Let the countdown begin to the official announcement of bands so I can start downloading more music to get hyped up.

Send Adam Lambert to Disney World

adam-lambert1

Ok I admit it, I’ve watched American Idol almost every season. Well let me rephrase that since I’m usually still at work when it comes on… I’ve ‘listened’ to American Idol almost every season.

After tonight’s performances, I would have to say that I think Adam Lambert is gonna win this year. The dude not only picked one of my all time favorite songs, Gary Jules “Mad World”, but he also nailed it and got a standing ovation from Simon Cowell, which that in itself is a huge feat.

Here is his performance if you missed it…

Earth Hour 2009

earth hour

I like the fact that people take the initiative to an participate in global efforts like Earth Hour. I also took a liking to the ad that was used in the campaign this year. This is a perfect example of how sometimes “less is more”. The design is simple, the colors are simple, the copy is simple.

Carlos Zambrano’s Plea for a New Wrigley Field

carlos-zambrano-chicago-cubs

Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano just said in an interview that he thinks they should replace Wrigley Field. C’mon Carlos, I think the majority of Chicago would have to disagree with you here. The reason Wrigley Field is still the way it is, is because it’s a historic landmark of sorts. I would be devastated if they ever tore down Wrigley…

No more Wrigley? Cubs ace asks for a new ballpark
By HOWIE RUMBERG
Apr 4, 6:44 pm EDT

NEW YORK (AP)—Standing in the plush visitors’ clubhouse of Yankee Stadium, Carlos Zambrano made a plea for Chicago to replace Wrigley Field.

“You come into a ballpark like this and you see great things,” the Cubs ace told The Associated Press on Saturday before his team’s 10-1 exhibition loss at the sparkling ballpark in the Bronx.

“You wish that Chicago’d build a new stadium for the Cubs,” he said.

Built in 1914 and home to the Cubs since 1916, Wrigley Field is the second-oldest major league stadium, trailing only Boston’s Fenway Park (1912). Fans in Chicago still flock to see the ivy-covered walls and keep alive Harry Caray’s tradition of singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during every seventh-inning stretch.

In 2008, their 100th season without a World Series title, the Cubs drew a Wrigley record of 3,300,200 fans, and thousands more peered into the field from rooftops near the neighborhood park.

Zambrano wasn’t just being his unpredictable self Saturday. As a player he wants a relaxing environment to work in, and he understands Wrigley’s appeal for fans despite the lack of amenities—who needs a martini bar, as there is in the new, $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium, when you can go loopy just trying to figure out the wind direction for that day’s game?

“People are used to Wrigley Field,” he said. “As a fan it’s hard to think of a new ballpark.”

Cubs manager Lou Piniella couldn’t agree less with his opening-day starter. The former Yankees outfielder and manager was enchanted by the new ballpark in the Bronx, but can’t wait to return to Chicago for the first home game on April 13.

“I don’t see why,” Piniella said when asked if the Cubs need a new stadium. “Wrigley’s got its own uniqueness. There’s no question the facilities need to be redone but that’s going to happen.

“My favorite time of year is when the ivy turns green. It’s really a great environment to play a ballgame,” he said.

Planted in 1937, the ivy that clings to the outfield wall sometimes snares balls.

But his favorite part of managing a team at Wrigley is checking the flags to see how the wind is blowing and then devising a lineup based on the directions.

“It’s like playing the British Open over there,” he said. “You’ve got to adjust to the weather.”

After two years as manager of the Cubs, Piniella has become well attuned to a ballpark’s wind. Aftere just one game at the new stadium in New York, he said, “It seems like there’s a wind tunnel that shoots the ball to right-center.”

Two of the Yankees’ four homers Saturday went to right-center.

Will Jay Cutler + Devin Hester = Crazy Delicious for Da Bears?

The Chicago Bears acquired Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos in exchange for Kyle Orton and first-round picks in the 2009 and 2010 drafts. Awesome news for Chicago Bears fans that have had no luck in the quarterback department for many, many years. In fact, Cutler was voted to his first Pro Bowl last season, which equals the number of appearances by Bears quarterbacks in the past 44 years. Yeah enough said on that.

Now the question is, can Cutler create some crazy deliciousness with Devin Hester?

jay-cutler_devin-hester_crazy-delicious

Last year was Hester’s first season playing wide receiver so 1) he was still getting familiar with all the plays and 2) Kyle Orton wasn’t too good at throwing deep. So with Hester’s speed, and Cutler’s arm, there may be some magic to get excited about in the 2009-2010 NFL football season.

First there was the Snuggie, now the Peekaru?

So the past few months there has been the cultural phenomenon over the Snuggie, a body-length blanket that has sleeves for your arms. It became famous after an unintentionally funny infomercial that lead to a mocking of the product and its commercial by comedians such as Jay Leno, Ellen DeGeneres, and Jon Stewart.

snuggie

They have sold 4 million Snuggies. Unbelievable.

So what’s next, may you ask, for the next “what-the-hell-kind-of-product-is-that”? Introducing the Peekaru…

I don’t really know what to say about this, but wow. I mean really? It’s one thing to have a blanket with arms, but this is just plain ridiculous. Not to mention what the poor kid must be thinking…

Conficker Virus: How to Protect Yourself

conficker-virus-worm

Well the Conficker Virus is supposed to hit today on April 1, 2009. It’s supposedly going to do all kinds of nasty things like take control of your computer, steal all your info, buy thousands of Girls Gone Wild DVDs with your credit card numbers, and could possibly set your screen on fire. Yeah, scary stuff.

With this said, I thought I’d put together a list of the best things to do to protect yourself from this annoying virus…

1) Call Chuck Norris.

chuck-norris-conficker

Even though the days of Chuck Norris facts are oh so 2005, he’s still clutch in times of crisis like these.

2) Cast a spell.

wizard-spell-on-conficker

Put your favorite wizard / witch hat on and start chanting away.

3) Karate chop its ass.

karate-monkey-conficker

Find that brown belt you worked so hard for and show that worm your best karate chop.

4) Use anti-virus malware software and make sure your security updates are up-to-date.

Simple as that.

All in all, pick and choose whatever you think would work best in defeating this virus. Good luck!

Lebron James on 60 Minutes

Lebron James was profiled on 60 minutes. Here’s a recap…

- Made $40 million last year which makes him the third biggest name in sports behind Tiger Woods and David Beckham.

- Was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in high school and didn’t even know what, or how big, that magazine was.

- Made this incredible shot on 1 take…

What a stud. The night I tried to give Dwayne Wade a hug (this story), Lebron came to the club as well. They strolled out in a pimped out limo. What a life these athletes live…
